YouTube stars are taking over

More than 1 billion unique users visit YouTube each month. The YouTube channel with the most subscribers is www.youtube.com/user/pewdiepie with a total of 26 million subscribers. These "youtubers" are gaining more and more popularity and are creating jobs out of making their YouTube videos. So what's stopping me or you from becoming the next YouTube sensation? We recognize "youtubers" when we see them featured in magazines or on billboards. They've become the newest celebrities of the 21st century, you don't need to be an amazing singer, a model or an actor/actress to become a celebrity anymore; all you need to do is make a video on something as simple as how you like to style your hair and you could be in. Will you take your chances and possibly become the next biggest YouTube star?

stage names

There are many different reasons that a celebrity will change their name before they become a worldwide star, such as ethnicity, ease of use, relevance to image, ease of remembrance, and musical use. Celebrities such as Pink, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Drake and Lady Gaga weren't born with these names. Kathryn Hudson or "Katy Perry" changed her name to Katy Perry because she already went by Katy but there was already a Kate Hudson in the acting industry. Destiny Hope Cyrus or "Miley Cyrus" changed her name when she was 15 after being nicknamed "smiley" to better suit her image. Peter Hernandez or "Bruno Mars" changed his name to get away from his Hispanic background. Is it fair that the industries are placing pressure on celebrities to have such a strong public image that they should have to drop a part of who they are to better suit what the industry thinks the public will respond better to?

what's privacy?

Because a person is famous, does this give us the right to look into every single second of their life? It seems this way. With paparazzi following celebrities constantly, twitter updates and magazine articles it creates a connection between the celebrity and the fan. But have we gone too far? The celebrity understands that they are famous and that someone's job is to take pictures of them, but it seems that the person (or people) taking the pictures don't know when to stop.

All these celebrities are getting frustrated with the paparazzi because they will not respect that they have a life that they want to live, however, they are incapable of doing so because they can't leave their house without being swarmed by the paparazzi. As I said before, the celebrity does understand that they are famous so they can be happy to pose, but there is a time and a place. If you were in their position, which would you want; a picture being published if you had just come from the gym or the grocery store and weren't dressed nicely or would you want a picture being published where you're all dressed up with your hair done and you are looking your best? Celebrities are the same way, but paparazzi don't respect this. There are equally as many, or more pictures of celebrities doing "regular things" like getting back from the gym as there are pictures of them "living the extravagant lifestyle" like at award shows or premiers.

As you can see, these same celebrities are willing to pose for events that are supposed to be for the public to view but are much more hesitant to even show their face during events that, to them, should be kept part of their private life.

why did you buy that?

Have you ever bought a product based only on the fact that you've seen your favourite celebrity wearing or eating this particular product? Companies use this tactic on the public everyday. It's called celebrity endorsement. When a company thinks that a celebrity has a good public image and attracts good publicity they may decide that having that celebrity advertise their product will result in further sales. An example of this is when Pepsi reached out to Beyonce and requested her for their commercial. Beyonce promotes a healthy lifestyle so if Beyonce is promoting their product that may introduce the idea to the public that Pepsi can be part of a healthy lifestyle. Beyonce was not well suited for this product endorsement and received negative publicity for participating in a campaign that goes against her brand. A benefit of celebrity endorsement for the company is that the social use of the product may increase. This means that because you see so many of your idols with a certain product, that it seems like the "cool" thing to have, even though the actual use value hasn't increased. We are influenced on a daily basis by the celebrities that we see in magazines, on TV, and on the Internet. Celebrities are paid to go and promote certain products where the company knows lots of people (especially teens) will see their product. Companies do this because they know that people will be persuaded to buy the product because of the celebrity who is advertising the product.

becoming a star: how to

Have you ever thought about being a celebrity? Have you ever wondered how celebrities have become celebrities? There is a simple five-step system to becoming a celebrity:

  • Get discovered
  • Get a screen test
  • Sign a contract
  • Build an image
  • Make appearances
It's hard to believe that every single celebrity has followed the same system since there are so many different types of celebrities, so lets take a look. Justin Bieber for example, he was discovered on YouTube by Scooter Braun, flown to Atlanta where he performed for many different record labels, he then signed Island Record's contract. To help build his image Justin made a movie to make himself more recognizable. Justin's public image has changed throughout the years as he's grown up from the small town boy from Ontario into a world wide superstar. He has definitely made himself recognizable and he is everywhere, he attends most award shows and makes appearances on many different shows such as Ellen.
Now lets look at another celebrity in the acting industry, Lucy Hale. Lucy was discovered on American Juniors in 2003 and was a part of the vocal quintet formed by the top 5 finishers. Lucy moved to LA in hopes of getting a record deal but then decided to start auditioning for television series. She was then given minor roles is various shows such as Drake&Josh, How I Met Your Mother, and Wizards of Waverly Place. Lucy built an image for herself on Pretty Little Liars when she was cast as Aria in 2009. Lucy has appeared at many different events such as the Teen Choice Awards, Young Hollywood Awards, Gracie Allen Awards and People's Choice Awards.
Justin Bieber and Lucy Hale have both used the same five-step system for success as a celebrity even thought they are in two different fields of work. The five-step system has worked for both of these well-known celebrities, it has worked for many many more and could even work for you.
